Lightworks 14: new features and interface

The latest version of Lightworks NLE, focuses on providing the next generation of video creators a toolset that is based on heritage film editing, but with a brand new user interface and integrated FX and content resources to make video for the internet age.

Yes, even a classic as Lightworks has to change. The new version of the program, available as a public beta that anyone can try, represents a radical change from what regular users of Lightworks are used to. Yes, the flexible layout is still there, but the new interface, said to be developed for those who prefer a more organized workspace is available now. It can be enabled via the settings menu on the project-browser screen by changing the ‘project layout’ option.

The new “fixed” UI gives users access to all the great tools within Lightworks but in a more intuitive and easy to learn layout. Straight out the box it allows users to import, edit, add FX and deliver video in all available formats and for all platforms. However, those editors used to the legacy UI can switch back to it with a flick of a button.

If you already have a previous version of Lightworks installed, the interface will remain in the same Flexible layout you have always used and all new installs will receive the fixed layout interface. For the moment there are some limitations in that certain features will only be available in Flexible mode (Render, multicam viewers) but EditShare says they are working to incorporate them into the Fixed layout as well. EditShare also hopes to receive as much as much feedback on the new fixed layout as possible, so they ask users to try it and encourage new users to also try the latest Beta of the program.

Lightworks 14: new features and interface

But Lightworks 14 is not just a new interface layout. More than that, Lightworks 14 is no longer just a standalone editor. It comes packed with audio and video FX tools for fine tuning and polishing your video content, and now also gives you access to premium content directly within Lightworks. And all royalty free!

Users can now browse a music selection provided by Audio Network in Lightworks and stream MP3 audio files directly over their sequence, add search criteria that best suit their requirements and then register or sign in to purchase directly. They can also benefit from Pond5’s library of royalty-free HD and 4K stock video that can also be accessed directly from the timeline. Stream and import low res proxy files (watermarked) then insert them directly into video sequence. Once happy with the music or video choice, the full quality content is then downloaded and available within the project.

The first Beta of version 14.0.0 on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X is now available to download! The final release of Lightworks 14 is expected to be available mid January 2017.

2D Character Template and Motion Library

Improved 2D character templates offer a variety of character creation styles and options. Animating a head from a photo to make it talk is still a key feature of CTA3 and there a many more ways to create characters from scratch or using a character template. The new G3 Character Templates include, Human, Animal, Bones and Elastic or Custom sprite and free bone character creations. To save effort on custom bone-rigging and key frame animation, we provide these rigs with full facial and body rigged character templates to allow users to utilize shared bones structures while enjoying a huge library of cartoon motions.

Powerful Bone Rigging for 2D Characters

Rigging 2D Characters from images incorporates the new 2D Bone Editor that offers all the tools to structure sophisticated bone rigs. Users can use pins to constrain areas to selected bones, and optimize subdivision topology for smoother bending effects. The easiest way to create a 2D character is by simply aligning bones along an image shape. Setup intricate 2D character rigs using custom bone structures, with pins to define static regions.

Animating Characters with Motion Curves

Polishing animations in CTA3 with professional results is made possible with the all new Motion Curve library. Select an animated element in your scene and add a motion curve preset from the library to ease and affect the smoothing of entry and exit of your animation performance. Curves are an essential tool pros use to make their animations pop and move with style and CTA3 puts the professional power in a one-click solution.

New Facial System – Dramatic and Smooth Blending

The Generation 3 (G3) head system can finally be applied to both human and animals. It allows you to do much more with fewer sprites. The FFD tool (Free-Form Deformation) gives smooth transitions between expressions, and the Transform tool provides continuous sprite movement. Create and edit the Sprite list for facial expressions: 9 for lipsync, 14 for emotives.

Elastic Motion – Instant Animation to Logo or Images

CTA3 can instantly animate an image, logo, or prop by applying bouncy Elastic Motion effects. Import an illustration, image or photo into CTA 3 and use the Elastic Motion effects library to squash and stretch animate any graphic element in the scene.

Automate object Entry, Emphasize Loops & Exit animations from a custom library

By combining FFD (Free Form Deformation), Transformation, Motion Curve, and Opacity Level you can fine-tune their parametric values to get ideal dynamic behaviours.

HDR preview mode for Flanders Scientific DM series monitors

The introduction of HDR preview modes in the DM series allows users to use the DM monitors they may be working with to monitor High Dynamic Range signals.

The DM family of monitors integrates three production environment workhorses for applications where color really matters. At the top of the list is the DM250, the most advanced monitor built by Flanders Scientific. The company says its specialized toolset is incredibly well suited for dynamic on set color management applications as well as the most demanding post production environments.

[embedded content]

The other two models, the DM170 and DM240 are durable, lightweight, efficient, and color critical production monitors equipped with Flanders Scientific most advanced feature set and capabilities. Industry leading fast mode processing, a durable all metal chassis, and direct integration with today’s most powerful color management tools make both models production environment workhorse for applications where color really matters. The DM240 reference LCD monitor was one of the highlights from Flanders Scientific at IBC 2016.

Now, all three monitors from Flanders Scientific DM series feature three selectable HDR Preview modes. FSI CEO/GM Bram Desmet had this to say about these new capabilities: “Our aim with these new HDR monitoring modes was to allow users to leverage current technology for High Dynamic Range signal monitoring in production and quality control applications. While not intended for HDR mastering these modes do provide a simple and cost effective way to monitor PQ or HLG signals.”

Three monitoring modes are available:

  • Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG)
  • ST2084 clipping at approximately 300nits
  • ST2084 with a highlight roll. This setting may be particularly useful in production environments as it will allow operators to visually distinguish all code values present in a PQ signal.

Current DM250, DM240, and DM170 monitor owners can download firmware with these new selections for free at

SliderONE gets a Motion Module

SliderONE gets a Motion Module

SliderONE is a small slider, easy to carry inside a backpack, offering videographers on the move a solution they can use anywhere. The new Motion Module, announced this month, opens new options in terms of use.

Presented as the world’s most portable slider, the SliderONE offers 15cm of travel that some will consider to short for a slider. Edelkrone thinks otherwise, and the company defends that experienced video editors know that most of the slider shots are cut during post, and that when that happens, what remains from many shots is a fraction that corresponds to the path traveled by their SliderONE… so why should we carry more than the 15cm long slider?

SliderONE gets a Motion Module

Whether you agree – or not – with the theory, the fact is that faced with the option to have a slider that gives you 15cm of travel and fits inside your backpack… and having no slider at all, you’ll probably accept the challenge and get one SliderONE. A slider this size may be the best option for a independent videographer that carries all the gear inside a backpack and moves around a lot. Edelkrone also says that with our eyes being only 2.4 inches (6cm) apart from each other the 6 inches (15cm) travel of the SliderONE can do wonders, as they deliver a much longer travel, allowing for enough slide movement in close-ups and mid-range shots, giving a good enough sense of depth to many productions.

[embedded content]

Now, one year after presenting the SliderONE, edelkrone gives it a Motion Module, designed exclusively for SliderONE. The acessory opens the door to a series of new creative options, including automated slides, time-lapse, stop motion, and macro shots. Weighing in at just over a pound, it’s SliderONE’s perfect companion that you will want to take everywhere, creating a “nice pair” which edelkrone refers to as “the world’s most portable, app controlled motion control system”. In fact, the Motion Module is controlled with an intuitive mobile app, available for iOS and Android, giving the user total control over all the aspects of the different modes of operation.
